One serious cause of suffering is unsafe pregnancies and births—a leading cause of death for women and girls in many parts of the world. For this and other reasons, family planning and maternal and child health are inexorably linked. Although implementing family planning programs, services, and support for young people can be complicated and controversial, there are many reasons to engage in this important, lifesaving work.
