Safety
Many safeguards are in place to keep study participants safe during clinical trials. Because the earliest trials of new microbicide candidates specifically evaluate safety, only the safest products and the safest amounts of those products are used in later trials. Side effects and other possible adverse events are closely monitored and recorded during the trials, and independent groups known as data and safety monitoring boards are assembled to regularly review the safety data and make important decisions about trial continuation.
